Keep in mind that debt counselors have repose with most creditors and sometimes they can negotiate to have your interest rate lowered to a manageable rate.

If you are researching a non profit agency, it is still necessary to ask questions regarding fees.

There still may be a charge for their services. Your main goal is to reduce your debt, hidden charges may increase it and so make sure all of your questions are answered.

There are a lot of debt counseling services that promise you an instant cure. There is no such thing. It took some time for you to get into this situation; it will take time to solve it. Do not fall prey to companies such as these.

All debt counseling agencies should be part of the NCFF (National Foundation of Credit Counseling) they have rules and regulations that their members must follow.

The NCFF logo should be listed on the agencies information. If it is not, then ask if they are a member. If you feel that they are not a legitimate debt counseling company, then you should voice your concerns to the NCFF and move on to another company.

When you have your first meeting, be completely honest with the counselor. Answer their questions truthfully and completely no matter how embarrassed you are.
